Why end every post in “actually?” It’s a longer story, but suffice it to say that several years ago, I asked my husband why my child was ending or beginning her statements with “actually,” and it’s all my fault. Justice, actually (as in the actual pursuit of it and not just a blog) . . . is messy/elusive/lit/interesting/rewarding/a laugh-cry moment. It turns out that founding, sustaining, and leading nonprofits is more complicated and arguably, convoluted, than you might imagine. Remember how your mom didn’t know what to say about how something went down and would just utter: “Well, they meant well?” Take it from a former executive director who is a lawyer working with nonprofit clients that your mom was onto something. This blog will provide you with insights on nonprofit governance, employment practices, accessibility, and strategy, with a dose of humor, light cat theme (image here is mocking my rotund British shorthair), and knowing look of shared trauma. Through my practice Justice Studio, I attempt to offer clear, practical legal guidance tailored to nonprofits so that they can focus on their missions, not any embedded dysfunctions. Welcome to the blog. Remember that reading a blog does not mean you got legal advice (wow, that was cheap!) or we established a lawyer-client relationship, but I’m here for that when the need arises and if you’re in Washington State.
